about

Máire Rua is named in praise of a 17th century historical figure, Máire Rua O’Brien of Leimaneh Castle, situated close to the Burren in North County Clare. It has many titles, including as a drinking song, Táím in Arrears, recorded by Cór Chúil Aodha. Breandán Breathnach included it in his tunebook Ceol Rince na hÉireann 2, having heard it from James Gannon, an accordion and concertina player from County Westmeath who also supplied this verse:

“Whenever you go to Kilkenny,
Look out for the Hole in the Wall.
It’s there you’ll get pig’s feet and bacon
And buttermilk for nothing at all.”

The second slip jig honours the historian and librarian James Hardiman of Westport, County Mayo, author of Irish Minstrelsy (1831).
