about

The first of these slides is associated with the Sliabh Luachra fiddle player and teacher Tom Billy Murphy (1875 – 1943) and it was later incorporated into a three-part tune, The Dingle Regatta, made popular by Seán Ó Riada and Ceoltóirí Chualann in the 1960s as a signature tune for the Raidió Éireann series of programmes Fleadh Cheoil an Raidió. The second tune has several titles including one taken from Samuel Lover’s song The Whistling Thief:
“When Pat came over the hill
His cailín fair to see
His whistling low but shrill
the signal was to be…”

Other names include Denis Murphy’s Slide, and it is quite closely related to a children’s dandling song, Cucanandy, which used to be sung by Elizabeth Cronin of Baile Mhúirne.
