about

Our concert began with Jenny gathering shellfish and now – to close – she is walking up the aisle … The County Clare musicians Paddy Murphy and Peadar O’Loughlin have been credited with popularising this first reel, which was published by Francis O’Neill and is also printed in Ryan’s Mammoth Collection. Toss the Feathers is a popular reel among musicians and there are several versions. This is the one played by the Dublin accordion player Patrick “Sonny” Brogan who was an early member of Ceoltóirí Chualann. In the 1960s during sessions at venues like St. Mary’s Traditional Music Club in Church Street in Dublin, musicians had a method to distinguish this setting of the tune from the other versions. In the middle of a selection of music someone would shout out “Sonny’s Toss” so that all the musicians would know which tune to change into next!
